The aim of this article is to assist readers in identifying if their aboriginal bark painting is by Bunguwuy by comparing examples of his work. He painted in a Eastern Arnhem land style.
If you have a Bunguwuy painting to sell please contact me. If you just want to know what your Bunguwuy painting is worth to me please feel free to send me a Jpeg because I would love to see it.
In general bark paintings by Bunguwuy depicting Gupapuyngu Mortuary Rite ceremonies tend to be much more popular and valuable than others. He uses all four colours available to fully initiated men and often uses large blocks of colour in his Bark Paintings. Areas not filled in blocks of colour are filled with relatively coarse rarrk (cross Hatching) or very fine dots. As with most Eastern Arnhem land painters he borders his bark paintings on all four sides. Occasionally he places fine dots to highlight smaller areas of colour.
His animals and birds on bark reflect his clans totemic relationships and include Emu turtles river birds and grubs.
Along with many other Arnhem Land Artists who did bark paintings, there is not a lot of information readily available about Bunguwuy. If anyone knows more information about the biography of Bunguwuy, please contact me as I would like to add it to this article.
